It is written "I like you". Photo zone of Haneul park

The site of the World Cup Park was, once upon a time, an island in Han River filled orchids and gromwells called 'Nangido'. The island was an ecological treasure with numerous wild flowers and migratory birds. However, in 1978 the Seoul City turned the island into a landfill site, and for 15 years it become the largest garbage mount in the world holding about 140 million tons of garbage rising 98 meters above the sea level. It was even called as an island with three abundant things : flies, dusts and stench. It became barren wasteland filled with methane gas and landfill leachate. Landfill operations were terminated in 1993 and the site was stabilized since 1996. In november 2000, a park was begun to construct, which was terminated in May 2002. Also in 2002, it was decided to build the Seoul World Cup Stadium om the site.

The World Cup Park is divided into four sections, each of which has distinctive characteristics : Pyeonghwa Park(Peace Park), Haneul Park(Sky Park), Noeul Park(Sunset Park), and Nanjicheon Park. The Pyeonghwa park has an open plaza commemorating the first FIFA World Cup in the 21st century and symbolizing harmony and peace of the world.

Silver grasses and reeds in Haneul Park

In the Haneul Park, the highest one in the World Cup Park, there are many competing colonies of silver grasses, reeds and sedges growing well in dry barren soil. In the Noeul Park, you can enjoy the most beautiful sunset in Seoul, and the park has wide lawns camping ground, in which you can relax yourself in downtown. The Nangicheon Park has colonies of diverse plants such as pussy willows and reeds. The World Cup Park clearly show the meaning and significance of environmental restoration through self-reflection against rapid economic growth, as well as challenge and determination of ecological restoration.
